WHAT IS ISO?

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is an independent, non-governmental, international organization that develops standards to ensure the quality, safety, and efficiency of products, services and systems.  ISO develops and publishes more than 18,000 international standards.  Businesses or organizations can choose to be certified to many of the ISO standards.  Certification audits are handled by authorized third-parties and conducted annually to determine if the organization is conforming to the ISO standard and continues to conform over time.

WHAT IS ISO 9001?

All standards within the ISO 9000 family refer to quality management.  ISO 9001, “Quality management systems – Requirements” is one of the best-known standards.  It is the only one in the ISO 9000 family that can be certified to and can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity. Over 1 million companies and organizations world-wide are certified to ISO 9001. 

ISO 9001 defines the criteria for meeting a number of quality management principles such as leadership, customer focus, process approach, and involvement of people. ISO 9001 is recognized as a way for an organization to prove they take delivering a quality product or service seriously. Several studies have demonstrated that ISO 9001 can substantially impact business performance.

WHAT IS ISO 9001:2015?

The final number in the standard designation refers to the version of the standard that is being met and is represented by the calendar year in which the standard was released. 2015 is the fifth edition of ISO 9001. ISO 9001 was originally released in 1987 and has been continually improving over thirty years of use.
